Talking Too Much

John Calvin says, “talkativeness is a disease of women & it is increased by old age. ... The consequence is that old women by their slanderous talkativeness, as by a lighted torch frequently set on fire many houses."

We should all learn to hold our tongues, especially those of us who like the talk the most, namely women.

Nancy Pearcey on the secular/sacred dichotomy

On a global scale, then, the secular/sacred dichotomy is an anomoly- a distinctive of Western culture alone. "The sharp line which modern Western culture has drawn between religious affairs and secular affairs is itself one of the most significant peculiarities of our culture, and would be incomprehensible to the vast majority of people."* In order to communicate the gospel in the West, we face unique challenge: We need to learn how to liberate it from the private sphere and present it in its glorious fullness as the truth about all reality. -Nancy Pearcey, Total Truth

The Tragedy of the Cross

"I have discovered that men are always fascinated by the thought of Lucifer, perhaps because evil is always more dramatic than Good, more spectacular, more bloody, and more frightful, and when men are not comedians- thought they never seem aware of the comedy of their being- they are, at heart, dramatists and tragedians. Yet strangely the tragedy of the sacrifice on the Cross does not touch them greatly and therein is another mystery." Taylor Caldwell

Always Enough Time

"There is always enough time to do God's will."-Elisabeth Elliott

This is a good quote, especially for us moms. I find myself so incredibly busy sometimes, that I get overwhelmed and then it's hard to do anything at all. But as one woman said recently, I need to take a step back and look at my life. What unnecessary things am I doing that are taking up my time so I am not getting the important things done? At this point in my life, I know for a fact that it is God's will that I am a wife, supporting my husband by making his home a more pleasant place to be (cleaning the house), supporting my hubby spiritually, physically and emotionally as well (taking time to be with him, and engage in profitable conversation), it is God's will that I raise my children in Godliness (caring for their physical needs, and consistantly disciplining, being an example of Christ for them), it is God's will that I care for my personal needs (keeping myself attractive for my husband, taking care of my body so I can care for everything else, and caring for my spiritual needs by constant prayer and studying God's Word), and my ministry to the body of Christ (for me, that means coordinating the nursery). Everything else is secondary. Everything else can wait, or not be done at all. I need to remember that.

Mathison on Postmillennialism

A defense of postmillennialism? Who would be optimistic enough to write such a book at the end of the twentieth century? how could anyone actually believe in postmillennialism, especially in light of two world wars, the Holocaust, the atomic bomb, and ethnic cleansing? Just look around you! How can you read today's newspaper and say that the gospel is going to prevail? My response to questions like these is, how can you read the Bible and say that the gospel is not going to prevail? Since when did the newspaper become our authority for doctrine? -Keith A. Mathison, Postmillennialism: An Escatology of Hope
